Caregiver burnout: signs, and where to get help in South Florida

If you're the one keeping everything together, you're not alone, and you're not doing it wrong because it's hard. Here's what the research shows, and where South Florida caregivers can get help.

You're one of millions

According to AARP and the National Alliance for Caregiving's Caregiving in the US 2025, about 63 million Americans are family caregivers, nearly one in four adults [1]. Nearly a quarter provide 40 or more hours of care a week. Nearly half have experienced at least one major financial impact. One in five rate their own health as fair or poor, and nearly one in four feel socially isolated.

Signs of burnout

  • Exhaustion that sleep doesn't fix
  • Feeling resentful, hopeless, or short-tempered
  • Getting sick more often, or skipping your own doctor visits
  • Pulling away from friends and things you used to enjoy
  • Feeling like there's no way out

If you're having thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988 (the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline).

Free help near Mom

Each county's aging agency can connect caregivers with services like respite, support groups, and in-home help:

Local helplines are generally staffed weekday business hours. Check each agency's site for current hours.

Take a real break

A short respite stay in an assisted living community can give you a few days or weeks off, and lets Mom try a community without a long-term commitment. Adult day programs are another option. Your advisor can tell you which communities near Mom offer short stays.
