Independent living in South Florida

Independent living trades a house and its upkeep for an apartment, meals, and neighbors. It isn't licensed in Florida, which makes local knowledge more valuable.

What it is

Independent living communities offer apartments or cottages for older adults, usually with some meals, housekeeping, transportation, and activities. There's no hands-on care included, though residents can often hire home care.

Not licensed, with one exception

Florida doesn't license independent living. Continuing care retirement communities, which combine housing with future care under a contract, are regulated by the Office of Insurance Regulation under Chapter 651 [1]. CCRCs explained.
