Care guide

Continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs) in South Florida

A CCRC offers independent living, assisted living, and often nursing care on one campus, usually for an entrance fee plus monthly fees. It's a big financial decision, and Florida regulates it differently.

How CCRCs work

Residents usually move in while independent and sign a contract that provides access to higher levels of care later. Contracts vary widely in what they include and what's refundable. Read every page, ideally with an elder law attorney or financial advisor.

Who regulates them

Florida's Office of Insurance Regulation regulates CCRCs under Chapter 651 of the Florida Statutes, including their finances, and publishes examination reports [1]. The assisted living and nursing parts of a campus are also licensed by AHCA. For consumer complaints about a CCRC, call the Department of Financial Services at 1-877-693-5236 [2].

Licensed assisted living on CCRC campuses

These assisted living facilities in our three counties (state status "Licensed" or "In review") report on their state profile that they are part of a CCRC [3]. This isn't a complete list of CCRCs.

That is the state's listed status on the day we pulled the data; it usually means a license renewal is being processed. It is not a rating. Select the badge to open the AHCA profile and check the current status.

Questions to ask

  • What does the entrance fee buy, and how much is refundable, when?
  • How have monthly fees changed over the last five years?
  • What care is guaranteed, and at what price?
  • May I see the latest OIR examination report and audited financials?
